Carl Pei's Nothing continues to punch above its weight class. The Phone 3 is the company's most ambitious release yet, combining distinctive hardware design with a genuine attempt at differentiating through AI software.
Essential Space AI
Nothing's headline software feature is Essential Space, a locally-running AI assistant built on a fine-tuned open-source language model. Unlike Google's or Apple's AI assistants, Essential Space is designed to be privacy-first: all processing happens on-device using the Snapdragon 8s Elite's NPU.
What it does:
- Smart Summaries: Condenses long email threads, articles, and chat histories
- Contextual Actions: Detects booking confirmations, tracking numbers, and meeting requests, then surfaces them proactively
- Voice Commands: Natural-language control of phone settings and third-party apps
- Writing Assistant: Tone adjustment, grammar fixes, and translation — all offline
Nothing is deliberately avoiding the kitchen-sink approach. Essential Space does fewer things than Google Gemini or Apple Intelligence, but aims to do them without a network connection and without sending data to any server.
Glyph Interface 2.0
The LED notification system on the back has been upgraded. Glyph 2.0 features:
- 45 individually addressable LED zones (up from 33 on the Nothing Phone 2)
- Music visualization mode that reacts to audio in real time
- Progress indicators for Uber rides, food delivery, and timers
- Glyph Composer 2.0 with community-shareable patterns
The Glyph system remains the most recognizable design element in the smartphone market. Whether it is a gimmick or genuinely useful depends on your usage — but Nothing has made it more functional this time.
Hardware specifications
- Display: 6.7-inch LTPO AMOLED, 2780 x 1264, 1-120Hz, 2,000 nits peak
- Chipset: Snapdragon 8s Elite
- RAM/Storage: 12GB / 256GB or 512GB
- Cameras: 50MP main (Sony IMX890, OIS), 50MP ultrawide, 32MP front
- Battery: 5,000mAh, 65W wired, 15W wireless
- OS: Nothing OS 3.5 on Android 15
The camera hardware is solid but not class-leading. The 50MP main sensor produces good results in daylight but trails the Pixel 9 Pro and Galaxy S25 in low light. There is no telephoto lens — a deliberate choice to keep the price down.
Pricing and verdict
- 256GB: $499 / EUR 499
- 512GB: $579 / EUR 579
At $499, the Nothing Phone 3 undercuts every Snapdragon 8-series phone on the market. The Nothing Phone 2a was already a great value; the Phone 3 moves into proper flagship territory while keeping the price below $500. For comparisons with other mid-range options, see our OnePlus 13 product page.
