Samsung's foldable line has been under increasing pressure from Chinese competitors — the Oppo Find N5 at 9.2mm, the Honor Magic V3 at 9.3mm — and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 appears to be Samsung's direct response.
CAD render analysis
Leaked CAD renders published by OnLeaks show a dramatically slimmer device:
- Folded thickness: ~10mm (down from 12.1mm on the Galaxy Z Fold 6)
- Unfolded thickness: ~4.9mm
- Weight: ~220g (down from 239g)
- Inner display: 8.0 inches (up from 7.6 inches)
- Cover display: 6.5 inches (up from 6.3 inches)
The increase in display size while decreasing overall dimensions suggests Samsung has significantly reduced the bezels on both the inner and cover displays. The cover screen aspect ratio appears wider, addressing a long-standing criticism that Fold cover screens feel too narrow for comfortable one-handed use.
Hinge redesign
Samsung has patented a new waterdrop hinge mechanism that allows for a tighter fold radius. Benefits include:
- Reduced crease depth on the inner display
- Thinner overall profile when folded
- Improved durability rating (target: 400,000 folds)
The new hinge reportedly uses a flex steel alloy that maintains rigidity while allowing the tighter radius. Samsung may also finally bring full dust resistance (not just IP48) to the Fold line.
Expected specifications
Based on supply-chain reports and past Samsung cadence:
- Chipset: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 (or updated 8 Elite)
- RAM: 16GB LPDDR5X
- Storage: 256GB / 512GB / 1TB
- Cameras: 50MP main, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP 3x telephoto
- Battery: 4,400mAh with 45W charging
- Cover display: 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X
- Inner display: 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X with S Pen support
The camera system remains the Fold line's weakness compared to the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Samsung appears to be prioritizing thinness over camera hardware, which may be the right trade-off for the foldable form factor.
Pricing expectations
Samsung has held Fold pricing relatively steady:
- Galaxy Z Fold 5: $1,799
- Galaxy Z Fold 6: $1,799
- Galaxy Z Fold 7: expected $1,799 or possibly $1,699 to compete with Chinese foldables
A price cut to $1,699 would be aggressive but necessary given that the Find N5 undercuts it by $500 at $1,299. Samsung's ecosystem advantages (Samsung Care+, trade-in programs, carrier deals) partially offset the price premium in the US market.
Timeline
Galaxy Unpacked is expected in mid-July 2026 in Paris, consistent with Samsung's 2024 and 2025 cadence. Pre-orders typically open the same day, with shipping two weeks later. Compare the current generation in our Galaxy Z Fold 6 vs Z Flip 6 comparison.
