Best Foldable Phones in 2026: Galaxy Z Fold vs Razr vs the Rest

Foldable phones in 2026 have crossed the line from "interesting experiment" to "genuinely useful form factor." The screens don't crease as badly. The software actually takes advantage of the extra real estate. The prices, while still high, have dropped enough that a foldable isn't a crazy purchase anymore. But there are still clear winners and losers, and the right foldable for you depends on whether you want a big screen or a small pocket.

Two categories, two use cases

Foldables split into two camps:

Book-style folds (Galaxy Z Fold 6, Z Fold 5): These unfold into a tablet-sized screen. You get a normal phone on the outside and a 7.6-inch workspace on the inside. The pitch is productivity: split-screen apps, reading, note-taking, watching video on a screen that's dramatically bigger than any normal phone.

Flip-style folds (Galaxy Z Flip 6, Z Flip 5, Motorola Razr Plus): These fold a normal-sized phone in half to fit in a small pocket. The pitch is portability: a 6.7-inch phone that takes up half the space when folded, with a cover screen for notifications and quick tasks without opening the phone.

Our picks

Best book-style fold: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is the most refined foldable on the market. It's thinner and lighter than the Fold 5, with a brighter 7.6-inch internal display, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, and Samsung's most polished multi-window software. The crease is still visible if you look for it, but it disappears when you're focused on content. IPX8 water resistance, S Pen support (sold separately), and seven years of updates.

At $1,799 it's expensive. But there's nothing else that gives you this much screen in a pocketable device. Compare it to the previous model: Z Fold 6 vs Z Fold 5.

Best flip phone: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is the flip phone we'd recommend to most people. It's $999 — still a lot, but $800 less than the Fold 6 — with a 6.7-inch internal AMOLED, a useful 3.4-inch cover screen, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and IPX8 water resistance. The camera is the weak point (only 50MP + 12MP), but it's good enough for most people.

Best value foldable: Motorola Razr Plus (2024)

The Motorola Razr Plus 2024 has the largest cover screen on any flip phone — a 4-inch AMOLED that lets you do almost everything without opening the phone. The main display is 6.9 inches at 165Hz, which is bigger and smoother than the Z Flip 6. Camera quality is competitive, and the design is gorgeous. At $999 it's the same price as the Flip 6 but with a better cover screen.

If you can wait: Galaxy Z Fold 5

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 from 2023 is still excellent and now available at significant discounts ($1,200-$1,400). It has the same 7.6-inch internal screen, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (still fast), and the same software features. If you want a book-style fold and care about value, the Fold 5 is the smart buy.

Foldable caveats in 2026

Be honest with yourself about these:

  • Creases are still visible on every foldable. They're less annoying than they used to be, but they don't go away.
  • Battery life is worse than slab phones. Foldables have thin bodies and big screens, which means smaller batteries. Expect 5-7 hours of screen-on time, not 8-10.
  • Cases are limited and expensive. The form factor makes aftermarket protection options thin.
  • Resale value drops faster than slab flagships. Plan to keep your foldable for at least two years.

If those caveats don't bother you, go for it — foldables are legitimately great in 2026. Browse all the options in our best foldable phones roundup or check the phones category filtered by brand.
